In mid-January, we reported on the success, indeed the possible “linchpin” of the negotiation, --recognition of Tiers (Seniority/Longevity), coupled with Stability of Appointments. We closed that announcement with the hope that it would soon be followed by an equally successful Compensation agreement.
Such was not the case.
As you likely read, were told, or learned at a recent Adjunct Union meeting, Administration’s compensation offer is woefully insufficient. The Administrative position primarily hinges on the economics in a challenging budget environment—they maintained the University simply could not responsibly afford to pay us more money.
We are mobilizing signing petitions, and voicing our concern and disappointment.
We discussed the inadequacy of Admin’s lowball offer and the fact that adjuncts are striking at CCSF and SF State and that the new and higher salaries for adjuncts at other Bay Area private schools are changing the market. Mills settled on compensation with agreements to pay $6,000 — 9,500 per 3-unit class depending upon seniority and degree. DU must not be left behind. The gap between Admin’s current offer and fairer pay is still wide.
We gave Admin a lot to think about and consider. While they seem open to some of our ideas, there is no promise or commitment yet from them for an offer that we can accept.
We need your help … now!! If together we show Admin that we are prepared to “do what is necessary” we are confident we can secure an acceptable Compensation proposal. Our strength is in our numbers and in our commitment to just and fairer compensation.
If you signed the petition or wrote a letter great!
If you agreed to attend an event, even better!
If you are responsible for coordinating others, fantastic!
If you are waiting for others to take action, NOW is the time to step up and help our cause!
Over the coming days and weeks, you will likely be called upon to increase your involvement. We count on your commitment and availability. Your Union needs you!
The next meeting, also with the federal mediator, is not until April 13th. During that time, we can reinforce our commitment to a fair compensation proposal to accompany our other successful negotiations.
As incentive, think about:
Senior Administration earn 100% of market
Staff earn 90% of market
Full Time Faculty earn 85% of market
Adjuncts earn 60% of market
To increase Adjunct Compensation to any significant degree, it will take solidarity. Mobilized and active, on short notice, we can get equitable compensation. Your response will make the difference! Answer the call!!
