Bargaining had seemed to hit a rough patch. Ever since Michele Hinken’s letter of July 9, Admin has been claiming that they simply were not able to offer us an interim raise while we are in the process of bargaining our contract. We challenged that assumption through written communications and at the bargaining table.
Last week we received the good news that Admin agrees with us – it is possible for them to offer adjuncts a raise while continuing to work together on equitable compensation and benefits for the longer term. Needless to say, this is a good outcome for adjuncts, and made our bargaining session last Friday a much more collegial enterprise.
In addition to the raise, we’ve agreed that adjuncts can now register for a class and use Conlan recreational facilities. There are some restrictions on class registration, so please contact one of us on the bargaining team or the Registrar to if you have questions about your eligibility.
We are hopeful that having resolved these issues will lead to increased collaborative momentum in negotiating proposals that deal with job security, compensation and benefits.
Our voices are being heard; we don’t want to be invisible anymore. Last week several of our members stood outside Caleruega speaking with students and faculty. It quickly became apparent that most students have no idea that half or more of their education is being provided by adjuncts. In their eyes, we are fully equal with their full time instructors. Won’t it be great when there is equity for the work we do at Dominican?
These gains came about through lots of hard work and by raising our collective voice. Together we can accomplish so much more than we ever could alone. Let’s keep it going! Please come to one of our General Membership Meetings, and lend your voice, your ideas, and your energy to this movement.
