Dear Colleagues,
Welcome back to Fall semester and Happy Labor Day! We hope that you had a great summer and look forward to connecting with you in the coming months. There is much to report, so please read on!
Medical fund - $20,000 in assistance for adjuncts
Thanks to our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), we were able to distribute $20,000 this summer to assist several adjuncts who are uninsured or buy their own insurance and who faced unexpected medical expenses. What would have happened to these members prior to our CBA?
General Membership Meetings - Tuesday, September 18 and Wednesday, September 19 (5 to 6:30 pm); Thursday, September 20 (12:15 to 1:30 pm). Magnolia House Board Room
Please join fellow adjuncts as we discuss our upcoming contract bargaining, give an update on current Grievance (see below) and discuss issues of importance to you! This is your chance to share your concerns and to meet your adjunct colleagues. Call-in for both meetings is possible. Please contact Dan Carraher for call-in information: [email protected]. Refreshments served!
Make School Grievance
Dominican has entered into a partnership with Make School in San Francisco to teach GE courses to their students. The first DU faculty members will teach at Make this fall. This summer, VPAA Nicola Pitchford emailed your Union Chapter Board that Admin would not be following our CBA when assigning adjunct classes at Make School. We believe that this decision is a violation of our contract. After discussing among ourselves and with our SEIU colleagues we filed a Grievance.
Grievance and Arbitration (Article 22) is a process that addresses contract violations and consists of multiple steps; the first step consists of informal meetings to try and work out differences. Throughout our first contract we have had numerous collegial, informal meetings with Admin to resolve disputes. There was little reason to think that this issue would be different. Sadly, that has not been the case this time. The conflict between the Union and the Administration will be argued before and resolved by an impartial third party Arbitrator.
Anyone wishing a fuller explanation of the Grievance please email Robin McCloskey: [email protected]. We will also be discussing the Grievance at our General Membership meetings this fall.
Bargaining our Second Contract
Our first Collective Bargaining Agreement brought about significant improvements in compensation and working conditions for our adjunct faculty. In the coming weeks we will be surveying adjuncts to get feedback on what's working well and what additions or changes you'd like to see. There is no doubt that an engaged and active adjunct faculty is necessary to negotiate a contract that successfully addresses our concerns. Stay informed, stay in touch and become a full member of your union.
Adjuncts in Faculty Forum
Our Union successfully negotiated with Faculty Forum (FF) to restructure the number of Adjuncts and the selection process for voting membership at FF. Our hope is to increase active participation of adjunct faculty at FF.
The new criteria work like this:

With the recent Janus decision by the Supreme Court, it’s more important than ever to make sure you are a full member of our union. Members enjoy full benefits, such as access to the Medical Fund and only members can vote for our bargaining team, and, eventually, our new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
If you are not certain if you are a full member, please contact our SEIU Field Representative, Diego Santelices: [email protected]
and he will sign you up. It’s fast, it’s easy and it matters!
As always, please contact us with your questions or comments.

Our Union successfully negotiated with Faculty Forum (FF) to restructure the number of Adjuncts and the selection process for voting membership at FF. Our hope is to increase active participation of adjunct faculty at FF.
The new criteria work like this:
- Adjuncts who are currently voting members of FF may retain their voting privileges
- The Board will appoint additional Adjuncts, based on a combination of teaching and active participation at DUC, and a commitment to attend FF
- The Board may select up to 20 adjuncts, or 20% of Full Time Faculty, whichever is greater.
