General Membership Meetings
On October 4 and 5 we held two general membership meetings that generated lots of spirited conversation. We discussed the major upcoming curricular changes and the impact on adjuncts, the role of Stewards and ideas for improving the Adjunct Course Preference Survey. Please read on and leave feedback below.
Major Changes to Curriculum Will Impact Adjuncts
We believe these changes will have serious, and in many cases negative, impacts on adjuncts. In fact, the upcoming changes are significant enough that they have triggered what is called effects bargaining. Representatives from the Administration and the union Chapter Board must bargain over the effects the curricular changes will have on our adjuncts. See the CBA, Article 2, p. 3.
What are your questions and concerns?
Before we begin bargaining, we want to hear from you! To read more about these changes and contribute your own thoughts and questions, please leave your feedback here on the blog or email your union representatives. Our first effects bargaining session is set for Nov. 1.
Stewards
Our union stewards are instrumental in building a united and involved membership. Our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) gives us “citizenship” at DU and rights that we did not have before. Stewards are the first point of contact when issues arise at work. Sister Aaron Winkelman is our Chief Steward. Deane Sorola, Pam Peck, Mark McAlister and Dan Carraher will also be serving as stewards. If you have any questions about stewards or are considering that role for yourself, please contact Sister Aaron Winkelman at [email protected].
Adjunct Course Preference Survey
Our CBA established hiring pools so that adjuncts could submit their course preferences and availability to teach classes in the upcoming academic year. As with any new system, there were unexpected hiccups when the survey was implemented last December. What was your experience with the survey? How do you think it could be improved? Leave your feedback on the blog or contact any of your Union Chapter Board representatives as soon as possible as the Survey is already in the process of being built and will be sent out by Dec. 1.
