Your newly elected DU Adjunct Union Chapter Board met on May 15. Here is a summary of what we discussed.
As always, contact any of your Board Members with questions or suggestions or if you would like to become more involved in your union’s activities. Participation in activities is a great way to meet fellow adjuncts, to strengthen our union and to feel more connected at work.
In Unity,
Dan Carraher, President
Robin McCloskey, Vice President
Bobby Bradford, Secretary-Treasurer
Sister Aaron Winkelman, Chief Steward
Stephenie Hendricks, COPE Coordinator/Delegate
- Our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) established a fund to assist those adjuncts who are uninsured or have to buy their own insurance and who are facing unexpected medical expenses. A committee of Chapter Board members will administer this fund.
- Merit Awards were approved for 20 adjunct faculty members, allocating the full available $10,000 fund.
- Chief Steward Sister Aaron reported that Deanne Sorola has been elected as a steward and others are considering the position, contingent on their work circumstances in the fall. Sister Aaron has also been in touch with adjuncts regarding class assignment issues as well as communication breakdowns between chairs and adjuncts.
- Online and/or conference call with PDF format accessibility to New Adjunct Orientation Meetings was discussed. Sister Aaron and Stephenie Hendricks will work on this possibility.
- Transition from Implementation Team to 3-part structure as described in our Bylaws: Chapter Board, Stewards, and Labor Management Committee. The final Implementation team meeting is scheduled for Friday, June 9. Sister Aaron, Robin McCloskey, and Dan Carraher will coordinate to prepare for this meeting.
- We would like to implement a project to facilitate better communication among our adjunct colleagues. Please contact Dan Carraher if you would like to join us in this effort.
- You may already be eligible to attend Faculty Forum as a voting member. Contact Dan Carraher to see if you qualify.
- Thanks to our CBA, there is now a bank of 300 hours per year to help compensate adjuncts who work for our union. We discussed how best to allocate these funds. Should we try to budget some of the hours for year 3 of the contract so that the Bargaining Team can be paid for some of the many hours they will be working? What guidelines do we want to use to distribute the funds?
